A few years back I edited Infection Control Today magazine. Every struggle we wrote about represented an epidemiological problem of preventing infections. I remember one news story about coating central catheters with antimicrobial material so that the problem of constantly changing central catheters could be avoided. If the material for killing germs could stay active, then the seriousness of replacing a major catheter could be avoided altogether. The antimicrobial material was not embedded within the catheter; rather, it was coated on the surface. That really improved outcomes.
Today PolyOne Corp., supplier of specialized polymer materials and screen printing inks, revealed that the company would be chairing the technical session, “Emerging Technology Forum on Advances in Anti-Microbial Technologies for Plastics” during ANTEC 2011 in Boston, held by the Society of Plastics Engineers on the week of May 7th. PolyOne will also be presenting a paper, Antimicrobials: An Overview of Technologies and Needs during the session, which explores the latest developments in antimicrobials, test protocols, and current successes.
Normally, we think of plastics and polymers in general as substrates upon which printing is done. However, embedding or making the antimicrobial part of the substrate adds an active dimension.
Many new ideas come from printing nanomaterials on the outside of a device or package, embedding special properties within a polymer, or printing in layers. In some cases, the package is the device. In September/October iSP, Alan Rae, Ph.D., will dive into how to work with nanomaterials, especially how to print them.
I have a feeling that the research on printed and embedded active devices has only just begun even in the field of medicine.
