Asian manufacturers speeding to market

Spurred by the strong sales of the Amazon Kindle and Sony Reader, Chinese manufacturers and content providers are rushing to join the domestic eBook market. According to iSuppli Corp., shipments of eBooks in China will reach 3.6 million units in 2010, up 70.7% from 2.1 million units in 2009. By 2014, eBook shipments in China will reach 17.6 million, iSuppli claims.

Among eBook display manufacturers, PVI E Ink is said to be the dominant supplier of electrophoretic displays (EPD) to the China market with 90% market share in 2009. The EPD is a sort of electronic paper or display technology that imitates the appearance of ink on paper.
